Eight months after reaching a cumulative sales figure of 900,000 units in India, the Maruti Brezza has successfully crossed the one million or million-unit milestone in the competitive utility vehicle (UV) market of India. The journey to a million units for this game-changing compact SUV took 94 months, equivalent to 7 years and eight months from its launch on March 8, 2016, to early December 2023.
According to SUV industry data analytics (refer to the sales data table below), the Brezza (formerly Vitara Brezza) is estimated to have sold a total of 996,608 units from its market launch through the end of November 2023. This puts it just 3,392 units away from the million mark, which it likely surpassed in the first week of December 2023. The Brezza has maintained an average monthly sales figure of 13,921 units, translating to 3,480 units per week or 497 units per day.
From March 2016 to November 2023, the Brezza is estimated to have sold 996,608 units, nearly reaching the million mark in the first week of December 2023.
Maruti Brezza: Presently the top-selling UV in India
Between April and November 2023, the Maruti Brezza has achieved estimated sales of 111,371 units, with a monthly average of 13,921 units. Maruti Suzuki India’s total utility vehicle sales, including the Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, S-Cross, and XL6, reached 414,631 units, marking an 82.52% year-on-year increase (April-November 2022: 227,164 UVs). Notably, the Brezza’s contribution to this total stands at 27%, making it the highest-selling UV model in the fiscal year to date.
If the Maruti Brezza maintains its current sales momentum for the remaining four months of FY2024, it could potentially achieve an estimated 167,055 units, surpassing its previous fiscal year high of 157,880 units in FY2019.
Accelerating sales have been attributed to the introduction of the Brezza CNG variant in mid-March 2023, following the success of the second-generation model launched on June 30, 2022. Prior to these developments, the Brezza faced stiff competition from the Tata Nexon, which emerged as India’s best-selling utility vehicle in FY2022 and FY2023. However, Maruti Suzuki and the Brezza have made a robust comeback.
Interestingly, the Brezza’s sales in the initial eight months of FY2024 position it as the leading utility vehicle in India, surpassing the Tata Nexon by 593 units. The Tata Nexon, India’s best-selling UV in FY2021, FY2022, and FY2023, has achieved estimated sales of 110,778 units. Only two other UVs have surpassed 100,000 units during the April-November 2023 period – the Hyundai Creta (108,584 units) and the Tata Punch (102,326 units).
Maruti Suzuki India, with 414,631 units sold, commands a 25% share of the UV market in the April-November 2023 period, and the Brezza contributes 27 percent to this figure.
The Brezza’s strong performance, along with Maruti Suzuki’s other UVs, establishes the company as the UV market leader by a significant margin. The 414,631 UVs sold in April-November 2023 reflect an impressive 83% year-on-year growth (April-November 2022: 227,164).
The best-selling Brezza (111,371 units) is followed by the Ertiga (91,743 units), Fronx (84,701 units), Grand Vitara (78,509 units), XL6 (29,944 units), Jimny (15,476 units), and the recently launched Invicto MPV (2,887 units). Consequently, Maruti’s UV market share has risen to 25.43%, up from 17.16% a year ago, placing it just 2,352 UVs behind Mahindra & Mahindra.
