Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra has stated that the Finance Ministry of India is currently not contemplating any duty waivers for Tesla Inc, the U.S. automaker. This comes after Tesla CEO Elon Musk mentioned that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was encouraging the company to make a substantial investment in India, hinting at an imminent announcement. Previous discussions between Tesla and the Indian government had revolved around requesting exemptions from customs duties for importing their electric vehicles, but India rejected these appeals. Malhotra emphasized that the Department of Revenue is presently not actively considering any duty waivers for Tesla.
