Tata Motors, the largest commercial vehicle manufacturer in India, has initiated the delivery of its latest generation of environmentally friendly commercial vehicles to Tata Steel. This fleet comprises Prima tractors, tippers, and the Ultra EV bus, all powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and battery electric technologies.
The vehicles were officially launched by N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, during the Tata Group’s Founder’s Day celebrations on March 3 in Jamshedpur. Also in attendance were T V Narendran, CEO and MD of Tata Steel, Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, and other senior leaders from both organisations.
The Tata Prima LNG range of trucks, including tippers (3530.K) and tractors (5530.S), designed for surface, mining, and long-haul commercial transportation, offer versatile applications. Additionally, Tata Steel is deploying the 28T EV tipper (E28.K) and 46T EV tractor (E46.S) to accelerate the adoption of battery-electric vehicles for real-world performance evaluation in logistics. Alongside zero-emission trucks, Tata Ultra EV buses will also be introduced for employee transport across plant locations.
These new-age commercial vehicles from Tata Motors feature multiple safety enhancements such as Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), Electronic Stability Control, Active Traction Control, and Driver Monitoring System. They have been handed over to Tata Steel’s delivery partners for the transportation of steel products and raw materials.
Commenting on the enduring partnership with Tata Motors, T V Narendran, CEO and MD of Tata Steel, emphasised their shared commitment to sustainability and innovation. Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, highlighted the company’s focus on sustainable mobility, aiming to support Tata Steel in its efforts toward a carbon-neutral supply chain.
Tata Motors continues to develop innovative mobility solutions powered by alternative fuels, including battery electric, CNG, LNG, Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine, and Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology. The company has showcased its range of alternate-fuel powered commercial vehicles at events like Auto Expo 2023 and Bharat Mobility Global Expo in February 2024. Notably, Tata Motors has supplied over 2,000 electric buses across various Indian cities, accumulating more than 12 crore kilometers with an uptime exceeding 95 percent.
