The Indian scooter market is witnessing a resurgence in activity. According to SIAM’s wholesale figures, November 2023 marked the fourth consecutive month with scooter sales exceeding the half-a-mln mark, totaling 509,119 units (refer to the data table below). Cumulative sales for the period from April to November 2023 reached 3,964,293 units, reflecting a 7% year-on-year increase compared to the same period in 2022, which saw sales of 3,690,501 units.
Scooter sales in November 2023 accounted for a 31.36% share of the overall two-wheeler market, which totaled 16,123,399 units, demonstrating a robust 23% year-on-year growth. Meanwhile, motorcycles, with 1,070,798 units and a 66% share, are experiencing renewed demand for commuter bikes from rural India. Mopeds, with 43,482 units, held a 2.67% share.
Among the ten SIAM member OEMs producing scooters in November 2023, only two experienced year-on-year declines, while the remaining eight achieved strong double-digit growth. Honda, with 220,034 units and a 14% growth, secured a 43% market share. TVS Motor, with 127,879 units and a remarkable 59% year-on-year growth, claimed a 25% share of the scooter market. Other noteworthy performers included Suzuki Motorcycle India (70,921 units, up 14%, 14% share), Hero MotoCorp (46,216 units, up 24%, 9% share), India Yamaha Motor (23,569 units, up 14%, 4.6% share), and Bajaj Auto (8,472 units, up 153%, 1.66% share).
