Renault Nissan Automotive India has announced its utilisation of green power for its operations throughout the latter half of 2023. During the period from July to December 2023, the facility maintained an average green energy usage of over 85% each month, reaching 100% in September 2023.
The company employs a combination of internally generated and externally sourced green energy to manufacture cars. Keerthi Prakash, Managing Director of Renault Nissan Automotive India, emphasised the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint. He stated, “We have outlined a comprehensive plan to achieve carbon-neutral operations by 2045 and become water positive by 2030.”
Renault Nissan Automotive India follows a three-pronged strategy toward carbon neutrality, focusing on increasing the proportion of green energy in its energy mix, enhancing energy efficiency, and embracing energy-efficient technologies at its Oragadam plant.
The energy mix comprises traditional power from governmental sources along with various green sources such as solar, wind, and bagasse/cogen power. The company aims to shift entirely to consistent renewable energy usage by 2045.
Renault Nissan Automotive India boasts an in-house solar facility with a capacity of 2.2 MW, directly supplying power to the plant’s grid. Plans are underway to expand this capacity to up to 14 MW in the coming years. Additionally, green energy is procured from external suppliers in Tamil Nadu, including wind farms in Tirunelveli/Coimbatore and solar farms in the Tirupur region.
Through its deliberate use of green energy, RNAIPL has successfully reduced over 30,000 tons of CO2 emissions between July and December 2023.
