Following Lee Kye-in’s inauguration as Posco International’s new president, the company unveiled plans for the global expansion of Dongdong Motor Core. On February 23, approval was granted for the construction of a new motor core plant in Poland and a second facility in Mexico, marking the initiation of the ‘2030 7 Million Production Era of Drive Motor Core’ blueprint.
Posco International aims to establish a global production cluster for motor cores in five countries: South Korea (Pohang and Cheonan), Mexico, Poland, China, and India.
The Polish plant, strategically positioned in Brzeg in southwestern Poland, will serve as a key hub for the motor core business in Europe. Situated near major European automakers’ production bases in Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary, it offers advantages for local procurement.
Construction on the new Polish factory, spanning a 100,000 square meter site, is slated to commence in June of this year with completion expected by May 2025. It will undergo expansions according to production plans, aiming for an annual production capacity of 1.2 million motor cores by 2030. Posco plans to commence operations with the production of 1.03 million motor cores ordered from Hyundai Motor Company in January, followed by orders from other major European customers.
Construction on Plant 2 in Mexico, initiated in May 2023, is set to conclude by March next year. Positioned near the first factory in Ramos Arizpe, completed in October last year, it will bolster the combined annual production capacity of both factories by 2030.
Plant 2 in Mexico will play a crucial role in supplying 2.72 million motor cores for Hyundai Motor Group’s Metaplant America (HMGMA) and meeting the local production demands of North American customers.
Posco International targets a 10% global market share by establishing a production and sales system exceeding 7 million motor cores annually by 2030. By localizing production across three continents where major automakers are located, the company aims to enhance logistics competitiveness, navigate trade barriers, and position itself as a core drivetrain parts manufacturer for eco-friendly future vehicles.
