Google Maps has introduced a range of new features to elevate the user experience. This popular navigation app now offers expanded options for discovering activities, enhanced information on EV charging stations, and improved visualization choices.
For electric vehicle (EV) owners, one of the noteworthy features is the simplified navigation to nearby charging stations. Both Android and iOS users will now receive comprehensive details about charging stations, including their compatibility with specific vehicles and charging speed categories: fast, medium, or slow. Moreover, users can now check the last usage date of a charger, a valuable addition to help users avoid non-functional stations. These updates are being rolled out globally on both iOS and Android platforms wherever EV charging station data is accessible. Google Maps Platform is also extending this information to developers, enabling them to integrate real-time EV charging data into their websites and applications.
Additional updates include an advanced preview of routes with the introduction of the ‘Immersive View for routes’ feature. This feature provides users with a detailed, multi-dimensional view that offers clear, turn-by-turn directions. It employs AI technology to merge Street View and aerial images, providing users with a comprehensive pre-visit experience. Moreover, developers now have the capability to create their immersive experiences with the introduction of Photorealistic 3D Tiles in the Google Maps Platform. This feature, which was introduced in May, will gradually become available in several cities, including Amsterdam, Barcelona, London, New York, and more, catering to both Android and iOS users.
To enhance map details, Google Maps has updated colors on the map and offers more lifelike representations of buildings. Furthermore, highway navigation will become more straightforward with enhanced lane details for complex maneuvers. These improvements will be rolled out in 12 countries, including the United States, Canada, France, and Germany, over the next few months.
Previously known as “Search with Live View,” the feature is now rebranded as “Lens in Maps,” harnessing the power of AI and augmented reality (AR) to help users quickly understand their surroundings. By tapping the Lens icon in the search bar and raising their phone, users can access information about nearby ATMs, transit stations, restaurants, coffee shops, and stores. However, it’s worth noting that this feature is currently expanding to more than 50 new cities, including Austin, Las Vegas, Rome, São Paulo, and Taipei.
