In 2023, Continental, the German tire manufacturer, achieved a milestone by supplying tires to all ten of the world’s highest-volume manufacturers of fully electric vehicles for the first time. This marked an increase from the previous year, where Continental supplied tires to nine out of ten manufacturers.
In the Asia-Pacific region (APAC), Continental became the original equipment tire supplier for the top five highest-volume electric vehicle manufacturers for the first time. Meanwhile, in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), as well as in North, South, and Central America (The Americas), Continental maintained its strong position, with the top five highest-volume manufacturers continuing to rely on Continental tires.
Manja Greimeier, who leads the Original Equipment business for Continental’s Tires group sector, emphasized the importance of tires with low rolling resistance for increased range and quiet rolling noise for enhanced driving comfort. Continental’s high-performing tires cater to these requirements, earning the trust of electric vehicle manufacturers worldwide, including established names like Tesla, BYD, Volkswagen, BMW, and Geely.
Continental has focused on optimizing its tires for greater efficiency and lower consumption since the early stages. The introduction of ContiEcoContact in 1993 marked the beginning of tire lines specifically designed for energy efficiency. Since then, all tire developments have prioritized low rolling resistance, reduced rolling noise, and increased mileage without compromising safety.
In response to the increased weight of electric vehicles due to their batteries, Continental introduced passenger car tires with HL load index identification in 2021. These tires boast higher load capacity, catering to the demands of EVs.
Continental’s tire development also accounts for the higher weight of EVs resulting from battery weight. Since 2021, Continental has produced passenger car tires with the special HL load index, providing increased load capacity.
Continental’s technological advancements benefit all vehicles, regardless of their drive type. The company has optimized its entire tire portfolio for all drive types. Since 2023, the EV Compatible logo on tire walls clarifies which tire models are suitable for electric vehicles and optimized for range improvement.
