Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, and Toyota have hailed the forthcoming Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP) as a bold and positive step for the Indian automotive industry. They expressed support for the initiative, emphasizing that it would encourage the production of safer vehicles in the country. The automotive companies also called for potential benefits or incentives from the government for manufacturers producing safer cars. Other automakers such as Tata Motors and Kia India also voiced their appreciation for the initiative. Under the BNCAP, manufacturers and importers will need to submit applications to have their vehicles rated according to the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS)-197. The star ratings will be uploaded on a designated portal, and participation in the program is voluntary.
