Toyota, the largest car manufacturer globally, has paused operations at its assembly plants across Japan due to a system malfunction. The Japanese automaker had to halt activities at its 14 domestic plants as a result of the glitch, which prevented the company from ordering necessary components. Initially, the suspension affected 12 plants, while the Miyata facility in Fukuoka and Daihatsu’s subsidiary plant in Kyoto continued normal operations.
As of now, Toyota cannot determine when operations will resume. The spokesperson stated that the system error does not appear to be the consequence of a cyberattack. This is notable as Toyota had faced a similar situation in February of the previous year when it had to temporarily shut down all 14 domestic plants due to a cyberattack on supplier Kojima Industries.
In response to this news, Toyota’s stock experienced a 0.64 percent decline in morning trading. Despite this disruption, Toyota, headquartered in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, retained its position as the world’s leading automaker in terms of sales for the third consecutive year in 2022, selling over 10.4 million vehicles. The company has set an ambitious production target of 10.6 million vehicles for the year 2023.
