Tata Motors is set to expand its design capabilities with the establishment of a new design studio in India. The move comes as Tata experiences rapid growth in the Indian market, unveiling updated versions of the Harrier and Safari SUVs. Currently, Tata Motors operates design studios in the UK, Italy, and India. However, the increasing demand for new models and design innovation has prompted the company to invest in expanding its design capacity. The new studio will further strengthen Tata Motors’ design capabilities, cementing its commitment to innovation and creativity in the automotive sector.
The existing design studios, which employ over 240 designers globally, include specialists with expertise in various fields, such as social and technological trends, to create future-ready products. Tata Motors actively collaborates with design colleges, with around 40% of its current design workforce being former interns. The company employs a blend of traditional and cutting-edge design approaches, combining ideation, sketching, and digital- and clay-modelling processes with advanced technologies like digital design tools, rapid prototyping, and 3D printing for swift assessments.
The forthcoming design studio is expected to boast state-of-the-art infrastructure and aims to set a new benchmark for automotive design centers in India. Tata Motors is dedicated to strengthening its product lineup, with the recent launch of updated Harrier and Safari SUVs and the upcoming introduction of the Curvv SUV in India, aligning with its commitment to providing high-quality, innovative vehicles to Indian consumers.
Martin Uhlarik, Tata Motors’ Global Design Head, emphasized the need for expanding the company’s design capacity in light of their growing product portfolio and the ongoing updates to existing models. As Tata Motors continues to invest in design and innovation, it anticipates making a significant investment in the new design facility in India in the next few years. The move underscores the brand’s commitment to delivering fresh, appealing, and forward-thinking vehicle designs to its expanding customer base.
