Tata Steel, the UK’s largest steelmaker, and Tier 1 automotive supplier Gestamp have entered into an agreement to significantly increase the use of recycled steel in components supplied to the automotive sector. Tata Steel already incorporates 17% recycled content in its automotive steel grades, and this partnership will raise the
recycled content provided to Gestamp to 30%, with no impact on quality. This initiativebenefits automotive manufacturers by reducing their carbon footprint. Gestamp’s circular economy model focuses on using high-quality scrap as a secondary raw material for low-emission steel production, contributing to sustainability goals. By employing the mass balance principle, Tata Steel will ensure the traceability and quality of pre-consumer scrap, ultimately enhancing recycled steel content. This partnership aligns with Tata Steel’s commitment to reducing the automotive supply chain’s carbon footprint and promoting circularity.
