BorgWarner has secured an agreement with a major North American original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to provide its bi-directional 800V Onboard Charger (OBC) for the OEM’s premium passenger electric vehicle (BEV) platforms. This technology utilizes silicon carbide (SiC) power switches to enhance efficiency, resulting in increased power density, improved power conversion, and compliance with safety standards. Production is set to commence in January 2027.
Dr. Stefan Demmerle, President and General Manager of BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems, expressed pride in the achievement, marking the company’s first OBC win with this particular OEM and its inaugural OBC victory in North America. He emphasized the solution’s capacity to maximize charging power, boost power densities, and improve efficiencies while accommodating various grid configurations across regions.
BorgWarner’s OBC technology is integrated into electric vehicles to convert alternating current (AC) from the power grid into direct current (DC) for battery charging. The OBC offers power capabilities ranging from 19.2kW for single-phase operation to 22kW for three-phase operation. The 19.2kW level is designed for single-phase grid connections, a unique feature tailored to the U.S. market.
The 22kW power level is intended for use in the European market, utilizing a three-phase grid connection. Notably, the 19.2kW single-phase charger is the only one of its kind currently available in the U.S. market.
Additionally, the OBC features a bi-directional vehicle-to-load (V2L) mode that allows users to utilize the vehicle battery pack to charge various standalone applications, catering to the industry’s growing demand for this feature. Both the charger’s hardware and software are designed and produced by BorgWarner.
