BMW Group Logistik, in partnership with Trailer Dynamics, has successfully tested an electric semi-trailer in real-world logistics operations. The tests included both short and long-distance routes, revealing significant fuel savings. Over short and medium distances, fuel consumption was reduced by more than 46%, and over long distances, it saw over 48% savings when compared to a conventional diesel truck. The electric semi-trailer, equipped with its own battery and electric drive axle, achieved a range of more than 600 kilometers without recharging when used in combination with an electric tractor. This innovative approach not only reduces fuel consumption but also increases the range of electric trucks. The testing demonstrated the potential for substantial carbon reductions and cost savings with the use of electric semi-trailers, even though they are slightly heavier and result in lower payload capacity compared to conventional trailers.
