Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. (TPEM) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance the electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in India. Under this agreement, the two companies aim to deploy 7,000 EV charging stations across the country within the next year.
As part of the collaboration, BPCL will install EV chargers at its existing petrol stations nationwide, utilising TPEM’s insights into charging patterns and usage based on Tata EV owners’ behaviors. The charging stations will be strategically located at places frequented by Tata EV owners. Additionally, the partnership will introduce a co-branded RFID card to streamline the payment process at these charging stations.
Santosh Kumar, Executive Director In charge Retail at BPCL, expressed the company’s commitment to aligning with the nation’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. He highlighted BPCL’s progress in converting 7,000 conventional retail outlets into energy stations, emphasising the collaboration with TPEM as a significant step to elevate their presence in the EV sector.
BPCL has already established over 90 EV Fast Charging stations along highway corridors spanning more than 30,000 km. These charging stations are strategically positioned approximately 100 km apart on national highways, providing convenient charging solutions for inter-city EV usage.
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., emphasised the strategic collaboration’s role in accelerating India’s transition to e-mobility.
