MAHLE Powertrain, a specialist engineering services provider, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art battery development center in Stuttgart, Germany, with a focus on meeting the requirements of its European clientele. This expansive 1,300-square-meter facility is equipped to handle all aspects of battery development, ranging from initial prototyping to small-scale production, catering to applications spanning from compact e-bikes to large electric trucks. This establishment complements the vehicle and battery development center established at MAHLE Powertrain’s Northampton site in the United Kingdom last year.
The facility features a fully-equipped prototype shop, including a cutting-edge dual-robot laser welding station capable of handling active HV battery modules. It houses a comprehensive test department that can test low- and high-voltage packs up to 1200V, 2000A, or 550kW. This department also incorporates two climatic chambers capable of operating from -40°C to +90°C to conduct a full range of aging, electrical, and thermal tests. The facility is equipped to simulate driving cycles in challenging conditions, ensuring top-tier safety standards with self-extinguishing workbenches and water drop tanks.
MAHLE Powertrain specializes in providing engineering services for the design, development, and integration of advanced internal combustion engines and electrified powertrain systems. As a subsidiary of the MAHLE Group, MAHLE Powertrain operates independently of the main group, with six technical centers strategically located in the UK, Germany, USA, and China, totaling around 400 employees. This positioning enables them to provide solutions globally.
